Thank Goodness we only paid $6 to rent on Amazon.
MEH! Did the director even read the book? It doesn't seem likely.
One more time when WOKE was allowed to kill a good story, along with poor direction. Did we really need a tribute with down syndrome? Or one with a legit eye condition? To what? Save on having a makeup person on staff? Really?
Rachel Zegler's forced Appalachian and southern mixed drawl is contrived, fake and appalling. The young singer's meager acting chops can not overcome that constant challenge. The result? Her ENTIRE performance suffered and was just flat, not authentic and lackluster.
We must BLAME THE DIRECTOR. He INSISTED on forcing the very young singer and potential actress to keep pushing forward with an accent that is simply beyond her! After day 2-3 of shooting, it should have been an easy decision to scrap that and reshoot whatever was needed.
After all, the REAL Hunger Games movies had normal speech and that worked!
If the director hadn't insisted on this totally unnecessary affectation, Zegler might have been able to pull off the role - MAYBE. We will never know.
What we end up with is primarily "made for TV", and total failure at the box office.
There were some good performances by other actors, but when the one key female lead is a bomb that's it. Sorry, Tom - you certainly tried.
