Ok here it is, my spoiler free review of Bridgerton. Please remember I am in love with Regency England, the Ton, Julia Quinn and have read The Duke and I no less than 10 times.
To start with, there has been some discussion about Shonda Rhimes using a diverse cast. To that I say, what does that matter? Is it historically correct, no, but it is FICTION. In a perfect world, skin color would have made no difference to your status at any point of history, but unfortunately that is not the case. However, the color of the actor/actress’s skin should have no bearing on how well they can preform a role. It should also have no impact on you enjoying the series. For example, other than being completely hot, I thought Regé-Jean Page was an excellent Simon. He had the ducal air and that raised eyebrow down to an art. Not once did it make a difference to me what color his skin was. I was impressed by his smolder and those heated glances at Daphne.
Second, was it true to the book? To answer it easily the answer is no. There were some liberties taken with the background story, but in essence, Simon and Daphne’s ploy to fool the Ton, their marriage and this issue they had to come to terms with was fully explored with very little variation (that’s not to say it was just like in the book). Remember going into this, it’s an 8ish hour series, the producers have to add to the story. Not everyone they are trying to target has read the books as throughly as some of us had.
Finally, to get to the point of this whole post, what did I think of it? Well, if you cannot tell, I absolutely loved it. I have issues with my attention span currently but I can tell you I was glued to my seat the whole time. When I got to the last episode I actually started crying, I didn’t want it to be over. Please, if you are expecting it to be just like the book, have issues with the diversity or just want to complain, don’t watch it. Please don’t spoil it for the rest of us. If you are going to watch it, go in with an open mind, I promise you will love it as much as I did...well maybe not as much, I am more than slightly obsessed with.
