Minnal Murali takes a tried and tested formula: "common man gains superpowers through a twist of fate, has to fight evil supervillain" and adds a dash of local charm and Kerala flavor. It shies away from gawdy storytelling and over-the-top production and instead chooses to focus on witty lovable characters with motive and backstory, set in an idyllic small town in rural Kerala. Subtle punchlines make you chuckle as you follow the protagonist, who navigates heartbreak, betrayal, a dark secret from his part, dreams of flying abroad and coming to terms with his newfound superpowers.
The villain isn't a one-dimensional antagonist embodying all that is evil, but instead someone you can empathize with- this adds an interesting moral dilemma: is it okay to do bad things for a good reason?
Tovino is believable as the ex-tailor turned superhero: with enough charisma and aplomb to lead the film into its final fight sequence. Performances worth mentioning are Soubin's egoistic policeman and Minnal Murali's quippy sidekick-little JOsemon. Minnal Murali is a fun, engaging superhero flick that will keep you reaching for the popcorn with every twist and turn.
