Very glad I didn’t pay for this game. They really thought they could just copy and paste Skyrim in space and we wouldn’t notice.
At first I was having a good time with this game. But quickly into the game you realize just how repetitive it is. What was fun at first is no longer fun when you’re hours in and doing it over and over and over. Same loot, same bases, same temples and missions again and again.
They say how massive the game is, “thousands of planets you can explore”. You realize very soon most of those planets are empty and void of anything to do. Would it not be better to scale the size of the game back and fill that space with engaging material? Go to the planets scan a few plants and animals and run through the same base you did 12 other times in one sitting.
So. Many. Loading. Screens. Board your ship, loading screen. Need to travel to another planet, loading screen. Get to said plant, loading screen to land. Need to now exit your ship, loading screen. Boarding another ship or station, loading screen.
Now let’s talk about the “original” story. You’re a seemingly nobody minding your business when you’re attacked and thrusted into a conflict where you learn you have special abilities, and you gain these abilities from visiting unique locations of power to learn how to harness these unique abilities, like an unrelenting force push, time slow, speed dash and sensing where your enemies are, just some to name… now did I describe Starfield, or did I describe Skyrim?? This game is just space Skyrim, but Skyrim works because it came out in 2011, and Starfield can’t hold the same success in 2023 with 2011 standards. The story about Terramorphs and the crimson fleet should have been the main story, not space Dragonborn chasing space shouts. But instead you can go and do the same side hustle missions again and again. Go kill this guy at this base, then go blow this ship out of the sky, then go rescue this hostage from a ship. Rinse and repeat.
Right now I think this company needs to figure out what they want to do with the future of games. Because right now they are stuck in the past beating a dead horse that is their algorithms for game development. At some point someone there will need to realize they can’t keep copy and pasting the same game over and over. Because how could a game this empty and unoriginal take the years it took to make. Go play No Man’s Sky, or just go play Skyrim again.
