Going into it I had some expectations. And they were all correct.
This movie proves that some musicals don’t and can’t translate onto screens.
It is over acted, very abrupt at times, and gives off many conservative views. Wasn’t the vibe.
There were no signs of character development, plot points were missing, and the overall storyline felt out of place.
I have to hand it to the kids their choreography was amazing…but that was it.
Miss honey was the only character with a backstory and was solidly written; props to Lashana Lynch who did her best despite what she was given.
Emma Thompson was a ‘Trunchbull’, I’ll give her that. But throughout her character had no depth.
Then there’s Matilda the main character. She didn’t stand out at all. To be honest I thought the girl with the red beret had more personality. And we only saw her 3 times. Not Alisha Weir’s fault at all, it was direction and the writers.
Overall it was a flop. Maybe if you have a 5 year old with a small attention span, they’d like this movie because they’ll keep forgetting why they’re there and laugh and clap anyways.
