Ok I really enjoyed House of Spoils for its layered and creative plot. Hear me out: The story keeps you guessing, especially regarding the main character's mental state—whether her experiences are due to her prescription medication or something more supernatural and inorganic. The mystery surrounding the previous owner of the property adds another compelling aspect, constantly making you question the true nature of the hauntings. I got just as frustrated as the main character did with the hauntings; what does the spirit want for crying out loud.
This adds to the tension which I think speaks to how well the film pushes its audience out of their comfort zone and makes them really think about it.
The climax took me by surprise, though I won't spoil it for you (pun intended). The way the plot unravels to its conclusion felt rewarding, providing a satisfying resolution to all the suspense.
Some viewers seem to approach this movie expecting a traditional horror experience, like Insidious or even The Menu, but House of Spoils is clearly more of a horror-"thriller." The comparison to The Menu is ridiculous, as the two films differ in almost every dimension. If you watch it without those expectations and actually stick with the story, the film’s message becomes clear.
Overall, House of Spoils delivers and any true thriller fan would know.
