There is a fairy tale magic to Blitz, a coming of age drama set in the hellish inferno of WWII London our young protagonist, a mixed race boy raised in a household with his loving mother and grandfather after his father was brutally attacked by a racist gang and escorted away by an uncaring police force never to be seen again.
War brings out the best and worst of people, and Steve McQueen creates a story that shows both the horrors and kindnesses, bravery and tragedy of this time.
Like Empire of the Sun, this is story of a boy dislocated by war, his race, his father and mother, who find strength through kindness and cruelty. It's and outstanding story, and a beautiful film. 5 Stars.
