Reading the reviews on Google for this film, I didn't have high hopes for the film. And after watching the film, my only thought is "meh".
The movie isn't your typical Pixar film, filled with extensive landscapes, well thought out characters and though provoking morals. To quote another review I saw here, "it feels like any animation studio could've made this film", and I couldn't agree more. Maybe it was my high expectations for Pixar, but this movie kind of fell flat.
Let me say, this movie definitely had a lot of potential. The themes and overall story was good, but scenes felt rushed and most felt forced to drive a plot point further. As a result, the climax didn't put you on the edge of your seat. To quote another user, "the stakes weren't high".
With the recent line-up of Pixar films, it's easy to assume that Pixar has lost their touch to some extent, releasing films such as Onward, The Good Dinosaur, and an extensive array of forgettable sequels. However, Pixar did still shine through their core message in this film; friendship.
Moving past everything I have said, the aspect of friendship really shone throughout this film, and at times I could feel the characters emotions personally. It's fresh to see a story, especially an animated film, tackle "bromance" so well. Overall, this movie is definitely worth checking out. It's more important than ever for viewers to really celebrate original films, because it's better than repetitive sequels.
