NO SPOILERS
A Quiet Place: Day One is a mix between the first AQP and the second AQP.
This movie has the horror and drama of the first movie, and the suspense and thrill of the second movie.
Horror: The horror is pretty good but the build up to the horror feels lack luster. There’s only one scene that had some build up. There are plenty of jump scares, some feel out of place but still pretty scary. The suspense is phenomenal, really keeps you focused and on the edge of your seat. The horror atmosphere of Day One is really good, truly does feel like a horror movie, but also feels like a post-apocalyptic movie too. This movie embraces the horror a lot more while the previous movies execute the horror better. One horror scene is a little laughable but can be shrugged off.
For the most part the horror is good.
Blood and gore: There is not much gore but there are plenty of scenes where blood is shown on cars, walls, windows, buildings etc which adds to the eerie atmosphere.
Don’t know if this is a spoiler or not so read it if you like, but most Death Angel/alien/monster scenes are shown as attacks rather than vicious killings. The movie does do a decent job in trying to push the limits without making it into a gore fest.
For the most part the gore is minimal but there is some blood shown.
Drama: The drama is pretty well done. The actress who plays Samira/Sam is very talented and did a really good job in her role. She is one of the best parts of the movie for me and has amazing character ark. The actor who plays Erik did a good job but some of the decisions he makes in the movie are a bit stupid.. he has good character ark but struggles with having the same appeal that Samira has. There are a few scenes that are just beautiful and really well scripted. Day One doesn’t have the same emotional drama that the first AQP has but it does a good job and it works well in the movie. It ties in well with the second AQP in terms of drama.
Comedy: Some jokes here and there, but very minimal
One thing I would like to point out is the cinematography, music and design of the Death Angels/aliens/monsters is phenomenal. The overall CGI is mostly good.
The design of these aliens are pretty much the same in terms of how they’re built but their bodies now have this fleshy and raw look to them, making them look even more terrifying.
Is A Quiet Place: Day One a good A Quiet Place movie? Yes, but it is a bit of a downgrade from its predecessors. It stays true to what the previous movies offer and doesn’t give a whole back story of where the aliens came from exactly and what happened to their planet etc, which is great, because it keeps the Death Angels as mysterious and nothing is scarier than mystery. And in my opinion I don’t want some comic book explanation of their history, not even in AQP Part Three. Day One has the horror, suspense and drama that A Quiet Place movie would bring but it won’t offer the same feeling that the previous movies did, especially the first one. It is definitely worth a watch.
It is a solid horror movie and gets a 7/10.
