Read many negative reviews here about the lack of plot or admitting their disappointment because they had expectations that would fulfill their current fantasy of a modern civil war. These reviews miss the entire point of the movie and the fine line it tries to walk.
REVIEW:
The movie is a glimpse into a somewhat apolitical alternate reality of America; it shows how fraught and chaotic the human condition becomes once the faith of the American order is displaced.
Further, it shows how valuable good journalism is in a moment of instability. The film asks you not to focus on the lead-up events that cause this conflict. However, there are subtle hints (3rd Presidential Term, disbanding the FBI, Airstrikes on US Citizens, etc.) that the characters mention in conversation. The creators intentionally throw you into the mix devoid of select pieces of information to circumvent your expectation of our current political reality and force the viewer to focus on the moment rather than its fictional past.
