For me there are two great ghost story movies, “The Uninvited” and “The Others.” I saw “The Others” when it came out and was absolutely blown away by the entire experience. It has everything a great ghost story should have: atmosphere on steroids, true suspense and a plot twist to end all plot twists. It really comes out of left field at you and yet makes perfect sense. It’s a beautifully crafted story. The acting is exceptional. For me, one of Nicole Kidman’s best and she’s surrounded by top tier talent who know what to do with good roles when they get them. Then there’s the two children. Just perfect. I love this director and this may be his best. This one’s an absolute must see for everyone in my book. Even if you don’t like horror—I’m not a fan myself — this is one you really should see. And if you can see “The Uninvited” check it out. It shows up on TCM usually in October and still has some of the best ghost FX after 80 years.

My favorite film version of A Christmas Carol of all time. Albert Finney is absolutely outstanding as the greatest of all of Dicken’s villains. His regrets, transformation and redemption is heartfelt and wonderful to behold. And what a cast! Everyone is perfect. The Cratchit family, all the ghosts and the people who owe him money are simply spot on. I particularly love seeing Alec Guinness as Marley’s ghost. His sense of glee at Scrooge’s final vision in hell is an actor having a wonderful time and a true treat for viewers. And finally, the songs are fabulous, beautifully performed and wonderfully choreographed. This is truly the best way to enjoy this timeless Christmas classic.
