As a fan of the fantasy/sci-fi genre in general, I was very excited for this reboot. Yes, I loved the original Charmed, but I was glad to hear about the differences in plot because I think too many reboots try to stick too close to the original. And I’m all for more shows that feature women of color as strong leads. But with all that said, after 4 episodes this series is boring and too kiddie. The plot is unimaginative and predictable. The special effects suck. The characters aren’t developed. I know these actresses have talent because I’ve seen them in other shows/movies. It’s just the writing does them no justice. The original Charmed connected with so many people because it was about 3 sisters who happened to be witches. They had lives, careers, complex relationships with eachother and all the people in their lives. They worried about finances, boyfriends, getting married, having children, getting out of the rat race. All the things most people worry about AND they just happen to also be badass witches who saved people lives too. This reboot feels like a show about 3 witches who happen to be sisters and therefore the character development is an afterthought. And the storylines are too rushed because there’s no real emotional meat to keep the viewers hooked. I tried to like it. I really did. I’m still going to watch because I hope it gets better. But at this rate I just turn it on as background noise because it’s too boring to keep my attention for the full 45 minutes.
