Not for the filmically homogenised. This is an intellectual look into the taboo ideas of motherhood. Visually arresting the film is beautifully shot and extremely disconcerting. In the end we (I, a woman) feel lighter / better having explored forbidden ideas that we are all frightened to experience and which loom at us in the dark when thinking about motherhood. Maggie pulls all these demons into the light showing us they are just as scary as we thought… but having seen the light become actually not so bad as we imagine them.
