Quite a slow moving, nuanced exposition of the Magdalene launderie scandal, seen from the perspective of an Irish family - Cillian Murphy’s character specifically, as he slowly appreciates his own good fortune as compared to what could have been. It also displays the power held by the Catholic Church in Ireland, whereby it was seen to be safer to turn a blind eye to the obvious rather than risk being ostracized.
The pace of the action I took to reflect the everyday slow pace of small town life, much of it mundane, with an unquestioning acceptance of the Church’s authority.
An understated, yet captivating performance from Murphy, quite a contrast to ‘ Thomas Shelby’.
The film’s ending comes as something of a surprise
