I waited many months to watch this movie. I respected Spielberg, no question, but I’d seen how Dickie Attenborough had butchered the brilliant Chorus Line and was repulsed by the treatment of Les Miserables, both Broadway masterpieces. If even a million people see an historic Broadway production, there are many millions more who will only see it in movie form and, for me, that carries a heavy responsibility for the production team. My fears were misplaced. Mr. Spielberg showed us what a magnificent director he is, regardless of genre. He has brought this story/musical forward with great respect for its roots, handling both dance and singing with a master’s touch. Expanding the locations gave new opportunities for choreography and casting actor/singers gave it authenticity. The music received the lushest possible treatment. Perfect, because this is one of the greatest musicals of all time!
