If you're planning to read the book, don't get deterred by all the negative comments. A lot of those negative comments have reasons on why they didn't like the book because, "it was too hard to read", or they didn't like the ending, etc. HOWEVER, I find their comments a bit unreasonable. YES, the book is a bit boring when describing the setting, but I think it's important that it's included in the book, as there is a lot of symbolism that you have to watch out for (which is actually really fun to try and find). The plot is quite fast, so if you just persevere through the first chapter, then I think you'll enjoy it! Also, people who complain about the ending don't fully understand the point of the book. In general, the book is a pessimistic view of society, so people should keep that in mind when reading it, even if they disagree with it.The book's main theme is how mankind all have an inner evil inside of them, and the ending only shows the result of that. It wouldn't make sense (and heads up, slight spoiler coming) if the ending was happy. Oh, and people also tend to misunderstand that this book is about survival, but it really isn't; it's not like Castaway or Hatchet! Rather, it's only taken place on an island to accompany the theme of man reverting to their primitive state and the certain circumstances by which spark the conflict and change within the characters. Oh, and a lot of people complain that the book is "too hard." Trust me, it's not. Like I said before, just a lot of description and symbolism, no difficult wording or anything (it's literally directed towards like, junior high kids!). Although the way the characters speak is slightly odd, you'll still understand what they're saying and what's going on. In conclusion, amazing book. They weren't lying when they called it legendary! I would definitely recommend, as it has a meaningful plot, a plot by which lights a lot of philosophy and self-reflection... It opened my eyes and made me ponder. It's also rather exciting and suspenseful. It has moments where it'll make you think: whoa, where did that come from..? (but in a good way!) I don't know how much more I could describe it... It's just a really great book!
