I was mesmerized with Phoenix 's characterization and appreciated the depth of history created in the film. That it was relevant to the darkness of the times is disturbing, but going there was an important and brave directorial choice. The film provided a chance for us to understand and feel compassion for the person rather than knee jerk repulsion of the dark monster created by his abusive childhood and society beyond.
