It was okay. Not fantastic. So many plot holes, and it just wasn’t scary. I think that’s the main thing that bothers Me. I, someone who gets scared SO easily, was not frightened. The only thing that put me on the edge was the opening scene. I think the animatronics were super cute, but the fort scene was so boring it made me genuinely question WHEN the movie was gonna be over. I’ve been a fan of this franchise since I was a CHILD, and when a dedicated long-time fan gets bored halfway through the film, I think it says something about the writing. I would go as far as to say Security Breach was scarier than this.
I went in expecting to be scared. I knew it was going to be off canon, I knew it, but just how far it deviated from the lore made it feel like it wasn’t even the same franchise. Like I was watching a fanfiction adaptation of the universe I grew up with, and it pulled me pretty far out of my immersion.
But onto the redeeming parts. I LOVED the animatronics, and I love how much Carl played a part in the movie. I wasn’t expecting that! I genuinely really liked the chase scenes that they did put together especially with the goons. (I don’t wanna spoil much for those who haven’t watched yet). The chase scenes were what actually held my attention and got me excited to see where things lead! I also loved how smooth the animatronics were, and unlike how many people reacted to the red eyes initially, it genuinely didn’t bother me. I actually thought it worked well, and the animatronics could look threatening when they wanted to. I know some critics are complaining about the animatronics not being frightening, but what can really be done about that without taking away the fact they were built to be child friendly by the company, not scary? Im not sure.
I guess what I’m saying is, I expected better. I hoped for better. But in the end we were warned this would be off-Canon, and to be honest while it did throw me off I guess it’s not a horrible Alternate Universe kinda deal. I just wish they capitalized on it more, and gave us MORE to look at with Vanessa and William. And above all else, I wish they made it scary. They took the horror out of the horror, and that’s something that I hope they improve on should a second Fnaf movie ever come out.
