I wanted to really LOVE this movie. I really enjoyed the cast, I loved the relationship between Ezra and Amira, they started as strangers, then became friends and then lovers. I loved how that relationship unfolded.
Then we have to meet the parents and that's where the movie fell apart. It felt like Ezra and Amira were in one movie and the parents, especially Shelly and Akbar were in a different movie. Ezra and Amira spoke from the heart, they had real conversations with each other, while Shelly and Akbar were horribly written, bad comedic tropes.
Why not have Akbar and Shelly speak as honestly as their children? Both of these people love their children and are probably frightened for them. Akbar could worry where Ezra and Amira will live; how do Ezra's friends and family feel about Black people? Shelly could worry about Amira not being Jewish and the grandchildren not be raised as Jewish.
I however liked how it came together at the end, there's a saying in a lot of 12 step programs: Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?
