This is a series that provides me with so many mixed feelings. There are things that I absolutely love about it, but there are things that I absolutely hate about it. I’m going to break down the good and bad (I will be working to avoid spoilers as best as possible)
Good
Chase- I thought Natalie Martinez’s character of Gabriella Chase was very well developed. I thought she did a great job of playing the roll overall, and I felt a connection to the character that’s stuck with me even after finishing the series. It’s always good to have a great lead like that, and I thought Chase was the best character in the series
Concept- while it’s very clear to see where the show draws inspiration from (Lost) I felt like the overall concept was unique and interesting. Furthermore, while I was able to figure out parts of the mystery, it was an interesting story to follow along with.
Ending- while there’s sort of 2 parts to the ending, (you’ll know what I’m referring to when you watch it) the 2nd part of the ending was phenomenal in my opinion. They did a great job of making me feel like I was closing a journey of my own, similar to the journey that Chase has been on. The ending to this show left me with a “wow... it’s really over” feeling that is so hard for shows to get right, but I felt like the I-land accomplished it perfectly.
Bad
Plot holes- there are so many plot holes it’s unbelievable. While the concept was interesting, they introduced several plot lines that felt irrelevant, and they just didn’t finish so many others. Furthermore, there are so many parts of the story that make little to no sense that it gets frustratingly annoying
Bad acting- besides Kate Bosworth and Natalie Martinez, the acting is dreadful. There are so many lines that felt forced or were just poorly delivered.
Every other character- literally every character sucked, besides Chase. The only other character who had any redeemable qualities was K.C, because Kate Bosworth is a great actor, but her character development was terrible. The writing didn’t give her an actual character, and her personality just kind of flipped to what was convenient for the story.
Storytelling- the big mystery is revealed in the 3rd episode. They could have made the story so much more interesting if they hadn’t revealed it that early. Furthermore, there are some very forced political undertones as well.
Here’s the thing about this show. Outside of the good things I listed, this show is awful. However the things it did well, it did extraordinarily well. For that reason alone I think it is worth watching, if you can look past the bad (which will be hard) you’ll be treated to a great Tb watching experience.
