I hate this movie. Forget the artsy fartsy garbage of people trying to intellectualize it, or even politicize it, the truth is it is depressing from start to finish. Just shows how screwed up people can be when they are the rich idle. You can get lost in yourself when you spend too much time thinking instead of belong a charitable, productive person. The female lead didn’t have any trouble that serving those less fortunate couldn’t have fixed. The servant was more complicated but he too was a horrible mess due to character flaws of discontentment, jealousy, cowardice and selfishness. Yes, the movie was good in that you are constantly having to see past their behavior to figure out why they do what they do and say what they say. Yes, everyone can relate to feeling conflicted, confused, unhappy and wanting someone else to just tell them what to do. And yes, we all know what it is stay in a place, even if it is a place you do not like, due to fear. But I hope this movie shows how unattractive and at times even disgusting it is when indulging all those emotions. Neither of these characters had wisdom or self control. Life doesn’t have to be that dramatic and complicated when you just stick to foundational basics of….Seek God first and make Him your center and priority. Be purposefully thankful for every blessing big or tiny. Stay busy doing good and productive work. Love others and use every opportunity to help and do good. If you stick with that, you won’t have the time, nor desire to focus on yourself. Both of these characters were so self centered. The servant reminded me of the character in the Bible who burned so badly with lust for a woman but once he had her, he despised her. Nothing but regret.
