Despite some wonderful acting, singing and dancing, the movie version of “In the Heights” made me miss the grit, vibrancy and straightforward plot of the Broadway production, which I loved. Found the movie too big, bombastic, and over-produced. Especially cringe-worthy: the clunky new wraparound story, the lopped-on political agenda, the random animation effects, and the huge repetitive dance spectacles. But I’m heartened that a much bigger audience will now have the opportunity to get acquainted with Lin-Miranda’s brilliant writing.
