I walked away from this show feeling rather sad and disappointed. Ellen has been a very charming comedian over the years. Many people loved her for her humour, generosity, and respected her courage to come out when she did and inspire others to live in their authentic truth. However, somewhere on this journey she seemed to forget to actually develop a solid sense of self, failing to become a mature responsible adult that understands their place in the world. I wish she would have taken the time to work on herself early on, truly healing what needed to be healed and learn from the people who mistreated her in order to become a better person.
We all know the pains of her early life, her childhood trauma, loss of a partner to a tragic accident, society mistreating her due to her sexuality and taking opportunities away from her. That’s maybe why it’s even more disappointing for all of us to eventually find out that she ended up becoming one of those people herself. Awful treatment of her guests and staff, strange associations with controversial people, closing both eyes when her staff were being harassed by those perverted men she hired.
And after all of this, she releases an apology, just to come on stage a few months later and tell us that she never wanted to be a boss, and that we in fact held her to such high standards that nobody could ever meet even if they wanted to. All that just because she told us to be kind to one another. If life was this simple and this false narrative was true, I guess we could all just move on and forgive.
Except that’s not how life works. Our actions have consequences, and these sadly ended up being too heavy for her to handle. It’s a shame to close her life and career this way. Empathy goes a long way, and the sooner we all learn it (including public figures) the better.
