Ok, firstly I'm not a long time DB fan, I've barely dipped into the anime and my first games in the series have been Xenoverse 1 & 2.
So firstly, this is absolutely not an RPG. A more accurate description would be a semi open world action fighting game with very basic RPG mechanics.
In a sense, as you level up, you'll open portions of the "skill tree" that you must complete training missions to unlock, which consist of fighting a group of enemies. That's basically it as far as RPG mechanics goes.
There's gathering, but very little emphasis on this outside of repetitive fetch quests. Beyond that materials for cooking and
R&D are in abundance providing you fight plenty and don't travel in straight lines between quests.
Cooking works to some extent, with a large variety of ingredients and tiered meals to make which give some nice stat and reward buffs, although this becomes almost irrelevant towards the back third of the game due to a huge power creep.
The combat is great and I'd guess would be the main draw for most players, although again, the power creep makes even the toughest the game has to offer more than manageable. Pro tip: Melee vastly out damages ki attacks, especially in battles where the enemies are a higher level than you, cancel a melee combo by dashing before the final hit for long and endless hit chains!
The story and narrative are interesting enough although not every line is voice acted and you'll be subjected to a lot of soundbites, lengthy cut scenes and the amount of loading screens is obnoxious.
It did seem as though some rather important story elements, (Gotenks for example) were omitted from gameplay and referenced in cut scenes or on some occasions the narrative simply informs you "This happened while you are gone". Didn't really affect me but I could see this being a small irritation for fans.
The map areas are vivid, colorful and abundant with NPC's, with plenty of collectibles to get stuck in to.
I know it sounds like an over all negative review but honestly I had a blast with it.
Coming in with no presumptions or particular expectations I was able to enjoy the game for what it is, a visually beautiful, narrative driven fighting game that is marvelously over the top and dramatic and great entertainment.
If you're a long time fan, I'm sure you'll love it, if you're a non fan, go in with you're eyes open on what to expect and enjoy what the game gets right.
