I just finished reading the book upon which this film was based, and typically of course there is much more development and justification for the events from reading the novel.
Having said that, this film adaptation has much to recommend it. Other than a very odd frame, set in a film studio.
Perhaps the point that they're trying to make is that everything is just stories anyway, whether it's a film, or the story's taken from the Bible.
The burning of the religious artifacts, near the end of the film definitely caused a bit of a twinge, since inherently the film is a great deal about faith. But we choose to live or we choose to die, and ultimately I appreciated where the story took us to.
Some lovely performances, the production design and cinematography was spot on, and I remain a huge fan of Toby Jones even if this particular film doesn't give him much to work with.
