Your story on the Cambodian donut shops contained a MAJOR omission. These refugees may have come to America with nothing, but shortly thereafter the United States of America gave each person a $20,000 warrant as soon as they arrived. I know, because as a 20-something Bank of America teller in 1979, earning $4.35/hr., I was held at the bank late on a Friday night to cash these warrants for a family that had no ID and no residence address, as instructed by the bank’s Vice President, who stood at my window, as I counted out $80,000 in cash.
Their minor children were each walking out with the same amount of money ($20,000) it took me 2.5 years to earn [at minimum wage] as a working young adult.
Very disheartening to work so hard for so little, so much so, that I never forgot the incident. I guess it’s the American way of things…
