I've always loved Jane Aiken Hodge from the first of her novels I ever read, Marry in Haste. And like that one, Escapade places us in an atmosphere both politically charged and romantic. The romance is, like Mary in Haste, clean and slow burning. My favorite kind. One of the things I've always enjoyed about this author is that her novels always place as in history surrounded by historical characters and actual events. I love reading a novel in which I get to learn something as well as lose myself in the story and in history. Though Charlotte isn't my most favorite of Hodge's characters, she is only 17. And she did managed to redeem herself there towards the end.
