i believe it's irresponsible to review this as if it were meant to be a "normal" movie. this is a big-screen adaptation of a video game, and thus merits exception from being treated at face value.
as other reviews may mention, there is certainly a bit of confusing plot progression and character development. these are tertiary additions to the core of this movie, and worth treating less importantly as such. a framework exists for these characters to interact with one another, and that's enough.
the core of mortal kombat is, and has always been, over-the-top and ultra-gory violence. the movie absolutely delivers on this. it is a faithful live-action portrayal of these classic video game characters fighting in their video game. if you're an MK fan you will recognize many direct references. again, at face value, they can be a little corny or whatever - but as a direct homage to the source material, it's all perfect.
curiously, there's a gratuitous amount of swearing. it didn't affect my enjoyment of the movie, but i found it a little strange (funny). bonus points for kano's dialogue lol.
i hope they make multiple sequels.
