I grew up with these books and read them recently. I was dubious about the tv series and was right to be. Why keep the time period and then write in things that just would not have happened. Even in the 70’s there would be no male form teachers - probably no male teachers at all. ( In a girls’ school) The styling is pretty off, and why are they always in summer uniforms - is it always summer in the 40’s. Disappointing. Characters watered down - Gwen is truly vile in the books and remains so, Alicia is sharp and clever, not this Canadian plumpie! Why do we have to have the very irritating Rob added, and where is Belinda?
