When I first heard this movie was being made I got really excited. I had always found Doss' story to be amazing. When I actually saw this movie I was thoroughly disappointed. The movie completely strays from historical accuracy in so many ways. The U.S. soldiers are running around like buffoons and so are the Japanese. It seems as if every soldier just forgot all of their training and were in an all out brawl.
The first two acts of the move are bad, that's all I can say. Garfield's representation of the characters is bad. He slows down the movie with dialog that's too slow or he speeds up the dialog and the viewer can barely hear it. The third act is a little better. The action was somewhat fun but the CGI battleship looked really bad and their was too much gore. Going into this I knew Mel Brooks directed it but I was shocked. It seemed as if he made every single death over the top and dramatic. It really sucks you out of the movie and eventually it just gets somewhat comedic. These historical inaccuracies and other small details (they never reload their guns) really just suck me out of the movie. At times this movie felt like it was made by Monty Python and the Flying Circus and not a gritty World War Two Movie.
