Awful mechanics, EA completely abandoned the aspects of the franchise that made it so enjoyable in earlier years (13-16). Tackles make no sense in terms of physics, directional passing is a joke, players can easily abuse two or three mechanics over and over (a rainbow flick, etc). to score countless cheap goals, playing defense is nonexistent-- the backline feels like its constantly in slow motion compared to attackers, even the simple stuff, like the inability to ensure that kits are different for each team in Pro Clubs matches, is impossible for this game to achieve. I cannot tell you how many games my friends and I have played with white kits vs. white kits because the game wouldn't allow us to change to away kits. How can you make so much money on a frenchise and not get the BASICS right?
Simply put, FIFA only exists as a cash cow for EA at this point. Ultimate Team is like a kiddy casino, pay-to-win mess revolving around buying FIFA points that requires countless hours of grinding. Meanwhile, the community-based game modes that used to be attractive as solid multiplayer options like Pro Clubs are neglected and clearly have little thought given to them year after year.
To me, EA should just drop the guise of this being a game that has any semblance of being competitive or even entertaining. Call it what is: a soccer lottery simulator.
FIFA is most likely beyond saving, though, because the current model works for making money. EA has long since converted into a marketing company first, gaming company last. The only hope now is that a good alternative hits the market (not PES) that has realistic but enjoyable gameplay. Then maybe EA will have to wake up and make FIFA playable again. For now, though, people will still buy FIFA because it's the only game like it on the market right now, other than the equally awful PES.
I have said this for years, but I won't be buying the next FIFA. I can't continue to financially support a franchise that lost its way long ago, and treats its user base like trash by continually neglecting the core issues of its gameplay and yet expecting 60 for a game with the same engine, new awful mechanics. If ANYONE at EA reads this, look at what your players are saying. Not Metacritic or IGN, but the ones who are actually playing it. Are you proud of their experience?
Go back to the drawing board, EA. FIFA 21 is beyond bad. 0 stars if I could.
