Huge names and celebrities...unfortunately playing small, confusing roles. I get the gist of the movie. A spoof-ish type of play/film of the United States government's "cover-up" of Alien first contact. A movie made to look like a play that you could watch at home. Only they broke the 4th wall..or 5th wall?..on a few occasions. I think. You see, even I'm confused about what I just watched. I'm even more confused that, AFTER I watched the movie, I found it was supposed to be a "raucous comedy."
WHAT am I missing?? I honestly did not laugh once. Maybe I was too busy with my eyes furled and mouth half open to..?
Great actors were cast to drone on their monotonous lines in such a disappointing way. I got excited when I saw a new actor FINALLY say his/her first line, but I got nothing. No emotion. I waited...and waited for this to get better. But, the plot was either too farfetched or artsy for me to grasp. No spoilers here (in my opinion) but I will say *[[SPOILER ALERT]]* to be safe..
To put it short, Act 1 was character build-up and confusing dialogue, Act 2 saw more action and characters coming out of their..shells?..but still ultimately wanting plot explanation. Act 3 was the best of the movie but very little tying of loose strings. Maybe they didn't bother. I can't identify where the climax of the movie was.
All that being said, I am writing this as your everyday movie fan, not a major critic. Maybe I'm just not artsy enough to comprehend or accurately explain the nuances of the theater/motion picture clash that I thought this was.
**Update...if you watch the movie with CC, closed caption on, the lyrics of the songs in the soundtrack seemed to have matched perfectly with each scene, each line, each situation in the movie. If that's the case, there's just too many components going on simultaneously that require your attention to appreciate what they're trying to accomplish here in this film/play/verbal musical/documentary work of Art.
SOO...either I am just not artistically gifted enough to appreciate the vision of the cast and crew (LOTS of big names!)...
OR...the the film/play just wasn't top notch. And I usually love Wes' work 😕
