I have not read the books. I am a scientist, I work with NASA, Los Alamos, Sandia, Lawrence Livermore, , etc..., people daily and the completely ignorant development of the characters personas is annoying and meant to entertain the ignorant not the educated.
Sophist don't understand science, and assuming that a show that ignores science completely but uses drama and lazy characters to ignore science completely but make more drama doesn't make science accessible, it makes people think science is lazy and easy. Science of every faucet can be explained in a simple and easy to comprehend manner... making characters unrelatable to a scientific community doesn't actually make science easy to understand.
People who see the one stars as irrelevant are literally the uneducated and ignorant and lack perspective...this show was just for them, not sci-fi fans, or people who want some sense of coherence in how personas actually work. What these 5 star reviews show, is that lazy people without scientific understanding desire to be smart but refuse to do the work, but because all the characters in the show somehow have the same problems as lazy people it's magically representative and somehow removes "stereotypes." Which is interesting and shows how Hollywood and science are so far disconnected..
Show uses very weak people as supposed intellectuals. Extremely non-diverse cast in an atempt to try and be diverse by casting everyone but the WM in the intellectual roles. Or if we stay with the source, Chinese.
Female intellectuals are petulant children…we are meant to believe that being brilliant and an inventor means drug using, anxiety problems, unable to control emotions, etc… the main instigator of the problem is proof positive of making women appear as incapable of acting mature in the face of chaos…she wanted to doom the entire planet because her life in her insignificant portion of the planet didn’t go as planned.
The next female, Dr. Ye’s maybe daughter …doesn’t really do anything except pop pills and act like an overly emotional toddler.
The nano fiber lady is a toddler as well with temper tantrums and has a complete lack of understanding when it comes to long run…
Suspiciously thrown in without any relevance is that the guy who works with Dr. Ye and is on the boat somehow feeds antivax rhetoric which doesn’t even tie into his characters agenda it’s there as a jab and placed without purpose. This same person also doesn’t understand how to explain parables and ends up turning the aliens against them.
The detectives son is made gay just to throw in some more uselessness…and the son is trying to start up a pyramid scheme and thinks himself an entrepreneur…useless character really.
The overall plot is fine…it’s the shows horrible character development, useless personas, and ignorant understanding of how intelligence works that makes it a cringe. Fortunately, if you can separate the hollywood need to push agendas into good stories you can come away with a decent story… Plenty of unintellectual people will praise this…because they think it affirms their vain introspective take on their own self.
