Disjointed with no continuity, terrible script, and a historic husband/wife relationship that couldn’t have been lamer in its portrayal. Not a hint of intelligence in a brilliant, complex ruler, and no indication of his lasting accomplishments. Secondary characters are fleeting caricatures.
Here’s how it went: take a series of historical events, do a 2 minute vignette, and skip to the next with no context. I had such high expectations for what could have been a fascinating movie, yet the things one remembers after this movie is Napoleon pulling a cannonball out of his dead horse, and repeated identical scenes of jackrabbit sex.
How I wish Steven Spielberg had followed through with his Napoleon project decades ago casting Dustin Hoffman. The great Napoleon movie is yet to be made.
