After last year's Wonder Woman (which was loads of fun to watch), I was excited for Aquaman -- the cast looked great, it was another 'solo' movie like Wonder Woman, maybe DC was going in the right direction now. But if I had to sum up Aquaman in one word, it'd be: wack. The visual effects were wack. The script and pacing were wack. Mera's wig was soo wack.
The movie's tone switches randomly from lighthearted comedy, to melodramatic soap, to serious action movie, and not in a good way. It just wasn't cohesive. And the music didn't help either, it'd go jarringly from a generic "oh no, we're under attack" theme, to a playful cheeky buddy-comedy sort of theme, to orchestral 'trying to tug at your heartstrings' music, to Pitbull. 🤨😐
And the overall production design was so.. distracting. We were too busy going 🤔 to every other thing onscreen (re: crazy greenscreeny backgrounds, sets, Mera's crazy wig) to be really pulled into the story. :( Jason Momoa and Amber Heard and the whole cast tried! But they couldn't save the script and editing and.. overall wackness :( Still gonna watch future DC films, though! I really wanna give them a chance and let them pull through 😍🙌🏻 At least we can look forward to Wonder Woman 2?
