Hilary Brown

A bit of a mish mash of themes and ideas. Good film in lots of ways, but fundamentally it’s another film about American vets going back to Vietnam and taking it out on the poor Vietnamese again while they ‘find themselves’. The difference is that this time the vets have another agenda ie being black in America and dealing with that history. But there is still a death toll among the Vietnamese they encounter and Spike Lee doesn’t seem to have much sense of how the Vietnamese might regard his vets as having been soldiers in the American war as the Vietnamese call it. Having said that, the acting is brilliant and it’s very clever in the way it’s constructed.

A fairy tale with Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) as the sweet innocent heart of the film. Her lovely innocence is wrapped up in Tarantino’s many obsessions, set pieces, movies within movies. It’s quite a moving idea, without giving anything away, I thought it was very poignant and generous of Tarantino, an ode to Sharon Tate.
