It's different, it's bold, it's in your face. Strong message, really loopy & striking visuals, great soundtrack, good performance by Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. The dynamics of the substance, how it works, how it impacts the main character, paints an accurate picture of the inner mental hoops many women gotta jump through in this day and age about their beauty, aging and self worth. To me the horror was not so much "horror", but a visceral disgust.

It's a whacky premise with lots of potential to go super dark but the movie decided to stay on the surface and kinda dip its toes in a lil bit. I don't really "get" the stylistic choice with the spinning camera and neon lighting and the black & white flashbacks and the soundtrack, for me it's disorienting and distracting at times. I also didn't find any character particularly likeable or memorable except for maybe Nikki. Yet somehow it was still a fun strange experience maybe because of how refreshing it was. I'd like to see this premise explored deeper if there is a sequel to be made. It's a 3.5 stars from me and considering its a debut feature of the director who also wrote it, I guess it's rounded to a 4.

Season 2: Erik & Lyle Menendez I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, given I have seen a bunch of articles about how the actual Erik responds to the series, how "sensationalised" it is... so I'll start out by first saying I understand how the series might affect the people in real life. However as an audience, to me it is a show, the fact that it is based on real events doesn't actually impact my opinion. The show looks great with the nostalgia 80s-90s Californian colors and vibe. The story immediately starts with the murder but slowly unravels as we see different points of view. The cast is great, I guess everybody raved about the 2 brothers already but I really enjoyed watching the parents too, as well as the lawyer and even the journalist. Everything does seem dramatized, slightly camp and over the top and some parts seem dragged out longer than it should. But nevertheless, the show really stayed with me after watching. Binged it.

Well I mean.. it's kinda a silly plot with quite a bit of unbelivable plot points to move the stoey forward, but watching this in 2024 kinda makes it even more comical how overly extensive and contrived the movie assassination plan is, considering Trump almost got assassinated twice in the past few months in real life. That aside, it's a pretty fun, fast-paced, no-fuss choice for your movie night in without needing to pay too much attention. 2 main actors, Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy, both did great with what they were given and were likeable enough that I could ignore the plot and just enjoy it as it is.

A fun ride with James McAvoy's lead. Gradual tension buildup, with a very American satisfying ending compared to the original. James McAvoy is so versatile and manages to be charming even as the crazy controlling macho bro-type. Mackenzie Davis is hilariously awkward, I love watching her reactions whenever the other couple do something unhinged. The child actor playing Ant was also great in the final scenes. The only thing is, since the American version already moved away from the original and dialed down the dark morbidness, they could amp up the action, the hide-and-seek tension more to make it even more fun.

I have always preferred psychological thrillers to actual gore so definitely Pearl >>> X for me. I enjoy Pearl's many haunting images that subtly (or not) mirror the undercurrents of the story compared to just kill after kill in X. Excellent cinematography with the vibrant colorful tone. Also, mentally oppressed girl unleasing her crazy and killing her oppressors + everyone who dares (perceivedly) cross her? Talk about "main character energy" and "taking control of the narrative" 🤣 Yes Mia Goth is great but also I think she is just naturally freaky and fits these characters really well 🤷‍♀️ not that it's a bad thing. That's why there's a whole X cinematic universe, I think they might make even more beyond Maxxxine.
