I went into this film, having been told on a family film night that it was Sherlock Holmes, so naturally, I was excited.
I have been robbed of a Sherlock Holmes film.
The Benedict Cumberbatch and RDJ takes on the series were fantastic and I thought I was in for another of those, but was let down From the first scene.
The first flash of a quote, which them said who it was from elicited a chuckle from the family and myself, but from the first sketch, I was immediately shown the quality of comedy that would follow and I was not happy.
The pace is awful.
The comedy is just inappropriate. The sexual innuendos are frequent and obvious.
The cast contains a wide variety of amazing actors but this film does not do their names justice.
Let me put it into context:
-7% from Rotten Tomatoes, one of the lowest scores in history.
-Common Sense Media says the age rating should be 14+, 2 years above what it is. The parents of Common Sense Media say it should be 15+ and the kids think it should be 16+!
There is a scene in which the Queen comes to Sherlock’s house and, through a series of events, is knocked out. The way that the writers handled this situation was disgusting. Her limp unconscious corpse is thrown around like a doll, shoved into a box and humped as well as being puppeted to fool the guards.
The Queen is a figurehead and, even in a comedy, should be handled with great care.
The only funny scenes are when the film takes the piss of itself and it’s own silly sketches and calculations and the tattoo artist attempts to point at a boxing ring but these moments are exactly that- only moments of actual laughable comedy.
There were multiple scenes where I had to look away and cover my ears like a child, humiliating to say the least (though I don’t think I was alone), because the comedy was so disgusting, men talking about touching themselves and constant outright prostitution. (A character comes out of Watson’s room handcuffed to multiple men and looking flustered before being berated and sloping back into the room).
Overall, this film was absolutely THE WORST film I have ever seen: the comedy; the pace; just the entire film, was disgusting.
I wouldn’t not recommend it anyone as a comedy or anything.
Do. Not. Watch.
