It’s been a long time since I’ve read a novel where I’m thinking about the people and the story when I’m not reading it. I’m thankful for meeting the author at Milwaukee public library at a Boswell Books conversation with Cetonia Weston- Roy. Many people will see themselves and family members and many more will learn why massive public housing towers were an absurd, inhumane concept reading this friendship story. Both these groups could have meaningful conversations on change. Our narrator Fe Fe embodies the concept of “Be the change”. You’ll need tissues!
Wolfe’s reconciliation is superb. I’m wondering why this isn’t an Oprah book club book selection as I think it’s well deserving of such an honor. If you think you’re in need of a book that somehow brings grace to the gangs, and humanity to the crackheads while wishing young 5th grade boys had a chance at life, yet needs the optimism of a daring heroine, read this.
