The narrow-minded jingoists who switched off at the coverage of the Union Flag conversation are an insult to the traditional tolerance of the British culture. I was born in England in 1941 and until recently have always been proud to be British (English). Nowadays the rise of xenophobia, the recent increase in racism, and the surge in adulation of the Royal family, is certainly a turn for the worse.(We seem to have forgotten the adultery of Prince Charles, and the failure of the Queen to acknowledge Diana's death). Nevertheless I cannot be but British.
