Just saw WSS. One of the major flaws of this movie was misrepresenting one of the most meaningful songs of the story not being sung by Maria and Tony. Originally, it reflected Hope, Forgiveness and a Bonding of the two lovers which was most important in being repeated at the end of the original movie. The finale of this movie went FLAT as did their version of "Somewhere". The production and the dancing were classic in both movies. Mr. Spielberg is such a great director but Kushner 's screenplay was manufactured to give depth to some of the characters (Tony as an ex-convict,...come on!) Who really cared?
Also, the marketing of this film was far too focused on self perceived flaws of the original. Got tired of watching such criticisms by Critics and Ms. Moreno. Actually, Ms. Moreno does deserve a nod for an Oscar. She is touching and refreshing in the film. This movie really didn't have to be remade and the box office results reflect that.
I judge a movie by how interested I would be in seeing the same film for a second time. It is a good movie but not worth revisiting. In spite of it all, the cast and Mr. Spielberg are to be congratulated for giving it a try.
