This movie hit me hard, especially as someone like Didi in this movie. While of course some of the moments in the movie were a bit exaggerated. It definitely shows the reality of how it is to be an ABC (American Born Chinese) and not really fitting deep into the stereotype.
I see a lot of people upset over the lack of 'Asian culture stereotype' but in reality, this is how most Asian teenagers are in America -- even to this day. The cinematography of how this movie was shot was seriously top-notch. However, I did skip some of the scenes due to how embarrassing it was, overall it was a 10/10 movie.
Especially the scene where Didi was talking with his mom, that part hit very close to home. My Chinese mother was quite exactly the same as Didi's and to see my own conversation replicated on screen was eye-opening. I've always gotten hate for not being "Asian" enough to conform to the American idea of a Chinese person. My mother as well, she isn't as traditional but still holds some values. To see practically what I went through as a Chinese American kid on screen through Didi. It was seriously amazing.
