I’m sure that many of us don’t need to be fed the yarn that a fictional Nazi sympathiser US president kept the US out of WW2 when the actual US President did that right up until the Japanese bombed Pearl. We sure appreciated the helping hand when it eventually came tho.

If you’ve never seen a sub do a handbrake turn on the ocean floor at what looks like 100 knots watch this 😂 Look our for the JCoS meeting that looks like a crowded elevator where the president, senior personnel and of course the world is saved from ineptitude by a surmising junior advisor. Really! Gary Oldman looking like the most dishevelled and implausible naval officer ever. At least Faslane looked plausible. Frustratingly comic book. Gave up before the end.

Slow, cerebral and atmospheric. Dialogue is sparse but well crafted and delivered by the suite of cast members. Cinematography captures the intended isolation of the locations well. One of my favourite GC movies. If you expect action ala Bond, Bourne, Transporter, Jack Reacher et al you’ll undoubtedly be disappointed. It’s never intending to be that kind of movie and fulfils that aim perfectly.

Atmospheric and suspenseful. Well acted by the lead in particular. However, red herrings and dead end plot lines throughout the piece together with loose ends at the conclusion makes this feel like a couple of hours wasted. Just exactly why Police Scotland were forced to drop a child kidnapping case is utterly bizarre and never explained.

Somewhere and at some point in time there will be a great movie in relation to the telling of the momentous story of the Bruce and his immortal place in Scots history. This is nowhere near being that movie. It plays like it should be a dull episode in the middle of a dull box set instead of being a standalone film about one of the top two of Scotland’s all time heroes. It was a wise decision indeed for backers in Scotland to not put money into this one.
