This was a fun, visually exciting but certainly not mainstream action/comedy whose main characters are female. The story arc considers what matters most to women in general. This includes love, success, relationships, fulfilling one’s dreams and being our best self.
It offered fabulous performances from all cast members with special mention going to Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu. The husband and father roles performed by James Hong and Je Huy Quan were equally strong.
The film both mocked and praised the action world of super heroes. Ultimately admitting that stories about alternate universes, like our own daily lives, make little sense. It encourages us to admit that we have little control over what works and what doesn’t work in business, relationships and love. In the end Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) must learn to stop fighting and pushing others away in an attempt to achieve standards of middle class migrant success. There are some wonderful gems stated about the role of middle aged women at the end of the film with the best dialogue occurring between the female leads. Go with an open mind and enjoy this visually impressive film.
