Ok if you want to know what the rating is for me I’ll spare the explanation for after if you want to see why, it’s a 7/10 for me. The gameplay is smooth as a whole, characters are decently balanced give or take a few that are a little too weak which is forgivable when your roster is this massive. There is definitely plenty of hours to put into it with the massive variety of game modes and things to do such as challenges, classic, mob smash, custom modes, training, spirits, and now stage builder and it’s fun.
However it’s not a 10/10 and here’s where it loses points, online without the LAN is bad, that’s one third of the endgame, and it sucks because you have to sink more money into the game just to make a mode you already have to pay to access (which in all fairness is way cheaper and it has just as good if not better options than the competitors) function properly. And it’s not the service at fault, it’s the game. Speaking of purchasing, if you want better input speed, you need to either purchase a GameCube or Pro controller (if you don’t already own one) so it feels like if you want to get the full effect of how good you are it almost feels like you need these...
Now as I said, that’s one third of the endgame, what about the other two? Well you can collect stickers which again the game is super fun with its roster and gameplay and I forgot to mention the stages and soundtrack, my apologies, and they even have these special set ups to make fights how they were in the games (best they can) and it can be humorous, impressive and it definitely shows they care, but sometimes they can feel a bit gimmicky and grindy when you have to shoot through a shield to get the sticker or save theses little buff things to get a reward I feel you should’ve gotten first win in general.
And of course the last endgame item is the challenges which embody all the modes and stuff you have played to make sure you did it all and that’s honestly feels like the most rewarding part of endgame, however it requires you to do the previously mentioned things as well as other things you may have forgotten to do.
Now I know I’ve really focused on the negative more than the positive, but this game is really REALLY good, it just really bugs me that these few things hold it back and I wanted to give a why to my reasons rather than just “I don’t like this” and I really hope that these get fixed because Smash bros as a franchise is amazing and I love and acknowledge how much effort that Sakurai and his team put into making this game (I mean the licensing alone dear god!) but there are some things that hold it back and these do get more and more noticeable the longer you play and I again love this franchise I don’t want these to be the thing that this addition ultimately (no pun intended) gets remembered for... so for now 7/10 but I really hope these get fixed or at least the online :( I would like to thank the people who bothered to read this and if you liked the other smash titles or party games or fighting games and you haven’t picked up Smash Bros Ultimate, please do but just be aware of these problems before you pick it up. Thanks again for reading.
