When I first watched previews of this show, I thought I was going to hate it. I wasn't sure if the animation style or the character design was for me, and I'm a big animation fan. I'm glad I waited til watching it to make my judgments!
Story - The show is intended as a loose "sequel" to the events of the original 1984 cartoon, and follows the Malto family, who become entwined with a new type of Transformer called "Terrans." It follows a "friend-or-foe" of the week formula that slowly ramps up in urgency, while gradually revealing what happened to the Autobots and Decepticons over the past 30 years. (There's lots of fun little callbacks to the original too!)
Characters - The main cast is a batch of new characters -- the Malto family and the Terrans, but it has a big share of legacy characters longtime fans will recognize. They've written them to be both homages to their originals, and new takes -- with many of the legacy characters acting as mentors (or bad influences) to the main cast. (Also, comic references and easter eggs galore!)
Animation - As I said, I didn't think I'd like the animation, but they've made the most of their budget by focusing on nailing the action sequences and high-adrenaline fights. The CG is overlaid with 2D effects for explosions, which make it feel much more lively.
Music - I was not going to mention the music, but the songs SLAP. The synth score uses a lot of 80s reminiscent vibes, and the motif that plays every time Megatron shows up has me waiting for him to make a new appearance every time.
Overall, this show is worth the watch! I can't wait for the rest to come out. I highly recommend it. This is a new show that doesn't feel like a stale reboot. I'd say on par with the 2017 Ducktales!
