I believe this is Will Smith's shining moment in acting. The story is simple but complex in the way the director chose to play it out. Revealing the end of the movie at the beginning sort of compartmentalized the way you saw everything it makes it one-sided. Each character Tim touches has also known heartbreak and heart-ache which is throughout the film with redundancy. You can empathize in a morbid way with the main character and paying the exacting toll of 7 pounds of flesh for his wrongs is literal but not convincing. He is a character you definitely love and hate equally. Either the writing or directing of this film is off because you get a sense of self serving in the main charcter that is quite disturbing. 5 stars for the acting which saved the film.
