A great start but after some chapters I felt the continuing recount of guilt and resentment wearing. The ending left me feeling frustrated. I gave 3 stars for the information learned about Chinese soldiers in WW2. Others loved it

I learned so much from this gently written book. Esme’s observations wash over the reader, soaking you in the period of history and role of women in late 1800s-1930. Wonderful
