I really, REALLY, want to like this show. It has great visuals, and explores ideas where no idea has gone before (pun intended).
But this show breaks form from all previous series, and has some BIG pills to swallow. This is especially the case for 'true' treckie fans.
Commander Burnham is by far the hardest character to accept. There is absolutely no way Star Fleet's most prestigious starship, would have a Commander so emotionally unstable and unbalances. She is the Commander of a starship, yet consistently challenges authority, disobeys direct orders repeatedly, physically assults other commanding officers, and tirelessly rants on and on with emotional outbursts.
I don't blame Sonequa or her character. As an actress, she nails it perfectly. I blame the creative writters for veering too far from the core principles of the genere, and confusing fervent passion with emotional breakdowns.
Commander Spock, Commander Riker, Commander Data, Commander Geordi, Commander Worf, Commander Chakotay, Commander Sisko (i think those cover all the series) - then you have Commander Burnham.
I just wish they would have done a better job with this missed opportunity.
