This is one of the best books that I have read. Parenting is not easy. The scars of childhood have a lifetime impact. I blame the mother for her impassive behaviour. Perhaps, she could have won over Kevin through her maternal love. Her reconciliation came when the damage was already done. The power of Shriver's writing is in her ability to make the reader loathe Kevin. There is little empathy for the woman who created the monster. The pity is garnered by the innocent sister and naive father. A lesson in parenthood in the VUCA world.
